Culinary Boutique Cafe - A new Dubai favorite!

Screen Shot 2015-12-22 at 12.56.01.png

In a nutshell

This is the Culinary Boutique cooking school's cafe, right in the heart of Jumeirah. The setting is one of the most beautiful I've seen in Dubai and the food is, as expected from a culinary school, refined and very tasty. My new Dubai favorite!

the mood

Fresh and contemporary in design, the cafe at Culinary Boutique offers a lovely setting both indoor and on their outdoor terrace overlooking Burj Khalifa.

the food

These dishes for the win:
- Lobster tail with sun dried tomato spicy butter sauce (we ordered this twice!)
- Wagyu carpaccio with rucola, truffle mousse and parmesan (twice as well!)
- Burrata with pesto
- Goat cheese and beetroot salad

Cocoa Room - Where dishes are also pretty on the inside

    Turkish eggs

    Turkish eggs

    In a nutshell

Recently opened as the breakfast place for Slider Station, Cocoa Room operates from 8am to 12pm only before it turns into Slider Station. Be there before 10am or forget about having breakfast there. Is waking up early for this worth it, you ask? It most definitely is.

    the mood

Similarly to Slider Station, first timers will get confused as the place looks more like a hip bar, this is especially more confusing when you're there at 10am for breakfast.

    the food

Almost everything on the menu is worth ordering but highlights include:
    - Turkish eggs: poached eggs with garlic labneh and chilli oil
    - Eggs Menemen: scrambled eggs with red chilli flakes, feta, red bell peppers, onions and tomato sauce
    - Scrambled eggs money bag: with shaved black truffles, parmesan and macademia nuts
And finish it off with their Banoffee pancakes!

Nola - Welcome to New Orleans

    In a nutshell

Newly opened, Nola is another JLT hidden gem by the same creators of Elia and Mythos. A New Orleans themed venue offering south american food in a charming setting. Great spot for drinks, food is not bad as well.

    the mood

New Orleans meets Dubai, including a saxophone player.  It's one of the few Dubai spots with such a vibrant unassuming atmosphere.

    the food

The menu offers lots of varieties. You don't go to Nola for the food itself, but while you're there, these are the recommended items to share:
    - Guacamole with Tortilla chips (This one is a winner. Ask for extra chips)
    - Baked camembert with drunken figs
    - Hot spinach cheese dip
And for desert, the Mississippi mud moelleux filled with mixed berries

The Surf Cafe - Go for the surfers... or the banana pancakes!

    surf cafe

    In a nutshell

Located right next to the Surf House, you can't expect but to find a bunch of hip people at the Surf Cafe, it's probably one of the places in Dubai with the highest concentration of good looking people. Besides these good looking people, the Surf Cafe offers a very laid back atmosphere and some really nice brunch food.

*This review is purely about their brunch menu as I haven't tried their lunch menu yet. Stay tuned.

    the mood

There's definitely a surf theme consistently maintained from the outside of the building all the way inside. You have huge surfboards hanging on the walls, floor to ceiling glass and a great mix of low tables, high tables and bar seats. Very laid back vibe overall.

    the food

Again, this review is purely about the brunch menu. Although the portions are a bit small, everything is very well done, there's no edge or twist to anything they serve, but the goodness is in the simplicity. Highlights include:
    - Acai berry bowl
    - Salmon cream cheese bagel
    - Any type of eggs
    - Banana pancakes (highlight!)
